Young entrepreneurs at Damers First School are celebrating after the team was announced as a winner of Virgin’s national business competition following the success of their eco product ‘Spick n Span’.

Known as Damers Eco Force, the team has been awarded Best Group for 5 – 8 year olds and Most Profitable Product in the Virgin Fiver Challenge out of hundreds of other primary schools that entered the competition.

After winning last year’s competition with their wild flower product Garden Grenades, this year the school’s Eco Crew have wowed the judges once more with ‘Spick n Span’, an eco-cleaning tablet that promises to ‘make everything shine’.

Edd Moore, a teacher at Damers First School who runs the school’s Eco Club, told Celebrating Poundbury: “This is an amazing achievement by a group of 5-8 year old children who have won a national award for the second year in a row.”

He added: “To have won two national awards this year at the National Fiver Challenge is unbelievable and I am so proud of the children in Damers Eco Crew. All their passion, enthusiasm, hard work in planning, designing, making and selling has paid off.”

Spick n Span contains all natural products known for their cleaning qualities, including bicarbonate of soda and lemon, and fragranced with lavender oil. Shaped into butterfly moulds, the cleaning tablets also reflect the school’s new butterfly logo and natural theme.

The young Eco Crew developed the idea and logo and the pupils had one month to make and package the product themselves ready for sale to the community using the £5 given to each pupil as start-up capital by Young Enterprise and the Fiver Challenge.

Local shops and businesses have also been keen to stock Spick n Span too including Poundbury Garden Centre, Munchkins Play Café and The Poundbury Florist.

Owner of Munchkins Play Café, Michelle Cheeseman said: “I will definitely feature their product on my counter and I am impressed that their teachers have once again harnessed their creativity, coming up with an innovative product! Well done all.”

Congratulations from everyone at Celebrating Poundbury.
