Meet the new owner of Poundbury’s newly opened hair salon meraKi.
Based on the entrance of Pummery Square, the former Hey Baby shop has been transformed into a trendy, modern hair salon.
Owners Katie Burrows-Kerr and her wife Ruth said they chose the Greek name meraKi because it perfectly demonstrated what they were going to achieve with their new salon. Katie said: “We came across the work and it fitted our ethos completely – it means to do something with soul, creativity, love, to put something of yourself into your work.”
Katie adds: “I have been a hairdresser for more than 20 years and I still love it. We wanted to do something really different here in Poundbury and we’re so pleased with how it has worked out.
“All our clients love it here and being in the square is a great location, plus of course everyone can park for free.”
meraKi (v.) to do something with soul, creativity, love, to put something of yourself into your work.
She added: “We both really like the style of Poundbury and we really admire what The Prince of Wales has achieved here. We’re pleased to be part of it.”
Katie and Ruth moved to Dorset a five years ago after moving from Brighton, where Katie managed a hair salon in the prestigious Lanes.
The new salon is very bright and airy and all of the shop fittings, table, mirrors have been carved from reclaimed wood by a local carpenter.
There are currently four members of staff working at meraKi and Kate said she’s really enjoyed handpicking the creatives she loves working with. She is looking out for two more stylists and requests that anyone interested should contact her.
This week the team is hosting a launch party on Saturday 19th August from 12-3 where people are invited to pop in and see what they are up to. There will be live music from Seabass, and hair demos and goody bags until 3pm.
