A WEBSITE company that launched in Poundbury five years ago is celebrating its birthday and reaching an incredible 40,000 customers worldwide.
Cuckooland is the brainchild of founders Russell Davis, Nathalie Davis and Alex Ledsham, who set up the company in 2012 after spotting a gap in the market for a lifestyle emporium that offered unique, high-quality products together with outstanding customer service.
To date, the company has generated £7.5 million worth of sales, with a turnover of £3.5 million in the last year and more than 40,000 customers worldwide. The company has experienced fast expansion, and has been growing at over 100% annually.
The website is a magical world of unique furniture & homeware, niche gifts and all things wow and wonderful. The vast majority of Cuckooland.com products represent “Cuckoo” (unique and unusual) versions of popular products and themes. The directors say the products are sourced from a world on the other side of the rainbow, a place of intrigue that offers a unique upmarket shopping experience with a fun gooey centre. The website also offers interior solutions for the living, dining and bedroom.
Director Alex Ledsham said: “We had decided to sell more in the gift market to begin with and we begun selecting products, designing the site and how the business would operate. We then, after a lot of deliberation, decided to move the business down to Dorset before we went live and grow the business from Poundbury.
“We found a perfect start up office in Prospect House and hired our first member of staff to help get the site over the line and for when we launched. We also found a great distribution partner in Swindon who would hold our stock, and ship across the globe and got ready for launch in October 2012. We were all so excited for launch. The stark reality of starting an online business is when you go live, only your friends and family visit the store, it was very tough and we had to learn fast.”
Alex said their first break came after getting their products into the national newspapers before Christmas.
He added: “After a lot of deliberation we decided we could still sell incredible products in the furniture market, and we started with kids beds. Our first range was Tree Houses bunk beds, that are still one of our favourite products today, our first order was for over ¬£10,000 to New York for three of these beds, and considering our average order was ¬£45 before, we decided this was a good decision.
“From there, we expanded on the range, and the business begun to grow very fast, we hired more staff and soon outgrew Prospect House and moved into Mey House where the team has grown to 15.
“Today we are in an exciting business where we still hold our core values true, we are in a position where we will soon be looking to design our own beds, take on exclusive ranges from across the globe and our aim is to really grow this from our home town of Poundbury. We believe this will be exciting for the community to have a new and growing company in Poundbury that is really looking to push the boundaries of what is achievable on a low self-funded business, our aims are big, and it‚Äôs exciting times here at Cuckooland.”
The company’s mission is to source original products of the highest quality, so that they can offer customers a fun and unique “Live in the Wow” experience. The team say they are dedicated to transforming the homewares market, and are confident the business will continue to go from strength to strength.
To celebrate the company’s fifth birthday, staff held a party in their office at Mey House, Poundbury. The company’s celebrations were filled with games, gifts, party food and a big cake in true Cuckooland style.
